NAPLEX Examination.
Practice Question # 61.
Naplex
Levothyroxine
- Predictable results of the synthetic T4 preparation and lack of T3-induced side eff ects have made levothyroxine (Levothroid, Synthroid, and Levoxyl) the agent of choice.
- Levothyroxine preparations are generally considered bioequivalent despite signifi cant controversy. However, when switching formulations, it is recommended to monitor the patient closely because there may be some individual patient variability among formulations.
The average adult maintenance dose is 75 to 150 mcg/day. Th e dose range has been shown to be 1.5 to 1.7 mcg/kg/day or an average of 1.6 mcg/kg/day for otherwise healthy adults. Levothyroxine should be administered preferably on an empty stomach in the morning, before breakfast.
