NCLEX Examination
Gentamicin:
Actions
- Inhibits protein synthesis by binding directly to the 30S ribosomal subunit; usually bactericidal
Indications
- Serious infections caused by susceptible organisms
- Prevention of endocarditis during GI and genitourinary procedures or surgery
Nursing considerations
- Monitor the patient for adverse effects, such as ototoxicity, nephrotoxicity, anaphylaxis, thrombocytopenia, and agranulocytosis.
- Peak gentamicin levels occur 1 hour after IM injection and 30 minutes after IV infusion; check trough levels before the next dose.
