Actions

  • Inhibits protein synthesis by binding directly to the 30S ribosomal subunit; usually bactericidal

Indications

  • Serious infections caused by susceptible organisms
  • Prevention of endocarditis during GI and genitourinary procedures or surgery

Nursing considerations

  • Monitor the patient for adverse effects, such as ototoxicity, nephrotoxicity, anaphylaxis, thrombocytopenia, and agranulocytosis.
  • Peak gentamicin levels occur 1 hour after IM injection and 30 minutes after IV infusion; check trough levels before the next dose.
